[BikeLongmont] Bike to work week in Longmont

Richard -- As a bike store we'd love to promote Bike-to-Work Week, with posters, bike safety checks, etc.  What we don't have is time and extra manhours during the peak season. However, we would promote and help out as much as possible.

  1. When is Bike to Work Week? June is Colorado Bike Month. Denver has a Bike to Work day on June 23, whereas Boulder's Walk&Bike Week is the week of June 19. The Shimano and LAB sponsored week that many cities have adopted is May 17.

  So, how about it Phil Greenwald? Can the city do something to help promote something like this? Nenad, can we talk about this in the meeting tonight? I think I would nominate the week of June 19 just to leverage off of what Denver and Boulder are doing. What are the other cities in the area doing (e.g. Ft. Collins, other Boulder County cities, maybe some of the Denver metro cities like Aurora or Commerce City)? After a date is decided, our Local Bike Shops can put signs up in there stores, maybe run special promotions that week (hint hint) if they have time to do something like this in the 8 weeks we have till then.

  It's probably a little late for employer sponsorship, but I'll nag my co-workers about it and put up a poster if somebody artistic can design something up. My employer has a "commute alternatives" program and sponsors bike-to-work week activities, but that's only in Santa Clara, not locally.

  Somebody can bug the donut and coffee shops for sponsorship of this event -- somebody to underwrite the cost of printing posters and maybe a giveaway or three. Somebody that looks good in a suit should do this; I recently shaved my head so I look pretty scary and hats don't look good with suits. Speaking of sponsors, does Pacific Cycles still have a design center here in Longmont? Some of the sporting goods stores and maybe even pawn shops might also be good sponsors.


  2. Construction notices: Excellent idea! I sorta brought this up before, but somebody from public works (can't remember who) said the city isn't really set up for this kind of thing. Notification of construction on streets and trails would be very nice. Today I decided to do a little bird watching along Lefthand Creek on my way to work. I crossed under Main Street from east-to-west and there was a contractor's truck parked right across the path. There was nary a barricade, fence, or cone in sight until after I rode through the mud around the truck.
