Richard and group,

While the City has been a continuing participant in the Bike to Work Day,
more promotion is something we can work on for this year. A number of you
met Ben Ortiz at last month's meeting--he and I are working to set up this
year's breakfast station near the west entrance of the library. Ben has
already been in touch with a number of businesses for support of this
year's station. In the past we've depended on the resources from the
Denver Regional Council of Governments and Go Boulder! to help get the word
out. This year we are looking into some other ways, including the utility
billing statements and newspaper coverage, to let people know about the
bicycling events on June 23rd. I am hoping that we can use the group list
as well to get information to the bicyclists.

Last year there were at least three breakfast stations: the one sponsored
by the City at the library, one sponsored by the Optimist Club (?) at the
Roosevelt Park park-n-Ride and one at the newer Starbucks in SW Longmont
(near Noodles and Wahoo's). It would be wonderful if more
groups/businesses could help sponsor these stations around
town--unfortunately the City lacks the resources and the marketing tools to
coordinate these activities in the same way as Go Boulder! or DRCOG. These
two groups will be releasing maps and schedules of events in the next month
or so. Our three (or more) stations in town should be on these documents
as well as information for the entire Denver area.

A while ago, Devin wrote:

I wondering what Longmont's participation in the 2004 Bike to work week
will be? The city of Boulder sends out emails to thier commuter list about
construction in Boulder and I am wondering what the group thinks about
getting the same idea rolling in Longmont?

1. When is Bike to Work Week? June is Colorado Bike Month. Denver has a
Bike to Work day on June 23, whereas Boulder's Walk&Bike Week is the week
of June 19. The Shimano and LAB sponsored week that many cities have
adopted is May 17.

So, how about it Phil Greenwald? Can the city do something to help promote
something like this? Nenad, can we talk about this in the meeting tonight?
I think I would nominate the week of June 19 just to leverage off of what
Denver and Boulder are doing. What are the other cities in the area doing
(e.g. Ft. Collins, other Boulder County cities, maybe some of the Denver
metro cities like Aurora or Commerce City)? After a date is decided, our
Local Bike Shops can put signs up in there stores, maybe run special
promotions that week (hint hint) if they have time to do something like
this in the 8 weeks we have till then.

It's probably a little late for employer sponsorship, but I'll nag my
co-workers about it and put up a poster if somebody artistic can design
something up. My employer has a "commute alternatives" program and sponsors
bike-to-work week activities, but that's only in Santa Clara, not locally.

Poster concept:

                        Longmont Bike-to-Work Week
                               June 19 - 26
Tuneup specials and great deals at High Gear/ACME/Hike-n-Bike all week!
          Visit http://www.bicyclelongmont.org/ for more details.
Sponsors: The City of Longmont, Daz Bog Coffee, LBS Bikes, Xyz, Blah, Foo
                                bar, Blink

Somebody can bug the donut and coffee shops for sponsorship of this event
-- somebody to underwrite the cost of printing posters and maybe a giveaway
or three. Somebody that looks good in a suit should do this; I recently
shaved my head so I look pretty scary and hats don't look good with suits.
Speaking of sponsors, does Pacific Cycles still have a design center here
in Longmont? Some of the sporting goods stores and maybe even pawn shops
might also be good sponsors.

2. Construction notices: Excellent idea! I sorta brought this up before,
but somebody from public works (can't remember who) said the city isn't
really set up for this kind of thing. Notification of construction on
streets and trails would be very nice. Today I decided to do a little bird
watching along Lefthand Creek on my way to work. I crossed under Main
Street from east-to-west and there was a contractor's truck parked right
across the path. There was nary a barricade, fence, or cone in sight until
after I rode through the mud around the truck.

3. The reason for my tardy reply to Devin's note: I was in San Francisco.
