It seems that Richard and I are thinking along the same lines again - have
the Boulder County Velodrome in Longmont!
I have no problem with Richard's proposed location, but was thinking of
another alternative - the Boulder County Fairgrounds. To me this has
several interesting features:
The location is easily accessed from all over the county - near the major
119 / Hover intersection.
The land is already owned by the county.
Compared with the other structures presently there, the Velodrome would be
by far the most outstanding architecture.
There seems to be a fair amount of "empty space" at the fairgrounds - and
the capability of moving things around to obtain even more.
The fairgrounds is only heavily used a couple weeks a year for the fair. At
other times just the farmer's market, some horse and arts and crafts shows,
etc.
Plenty of parking space.
And, the highlight of the Boulder County Fair would be the big evening of
bike racing in between the days allocated to the tractor pull and demolition
derby. What could be a better icon to represent Boulder County!?
On the down side, from the article in the newspaper it appeared that the
major private financing may be contingent on combining it with some kind of
health center. This could preclude locating it on county property or
perhaps in Longmont at all.
In any event, I'm planning on attending the meeting on Sunday and letting
people there know that there are lots of people in Longmont who would
welcome having the Velodrome somewhere in the Longmont area.
Aside: Velodromes are still so rare that the word isn't even in the
Microsoft spellcheck yet!
