The Colorado Department of Transportation "North 40" project encompasses
40 miles of I-25 between Fort Collins and Denver. They have begun the
process of an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) of a portion of this
corridor. The planning study area encompasses Ft. Collins, Greeley,
Berthoud, Longmont, Platteville, the Tri-Town area, Ft. Lupton,
Brighton, Commerce City, Westminster, north Denver, Lousville,
Lafayette, Boulder, and Niwot.
At the Open House last night in Greeley, suggested transportation
enhancements included a significant widening of U.S. 287 and U.S. 85 to
provide alternate routes into Denver. Cyclists in and around Longmont
should become involved in the planning process to ensure bicycle access
is preserved and possibly even enhanced on these highways and connecting
roads. Some may also want to provide input regarding alternate
transportation modes along this corridor.
The next Open House is 4 to 7 p.m. this Thursday, February 5 at the Weld
County Services Complex on the I-25 frontage road north of Hwy 119
(north of Wendy's). After that, there's an Open House in Fort Collins on
February 10. Feedback can also be provided via the "North 40" EIS
website at:
