At our February meeting, we were few, but we were enthusiastic. Actually there were only three of us, but we got a lot done. Those attending were: Len Marques, City Civil Engineer; Lauren Greenfield and myself, Buzz Feldman.

There was unanimous agreement that Nenad is doing a great job as our fearless leader and that without him, the group wouldn't have anywhere the same energy or effectiveness. So Nenad, your are our Chairman for Life. Get used to it. See what happens when you miss a meeting?

We took a look at the updated notes that Len has for the next City bike map, that should be out this Spring. Lauren, as Director of Longmont's Arts In Public Places Committee added all the places around town where there exist sculptures or other artsy pieces. That is a great addition to the map as it gives folks a reason to ride and suggested destinations. Len is also adding the location of drinking fountains, city services and the three bike shops. When completed, this will be a very useful map for residents. Comparing this new map with even the previous one, it is obvious the city has made great strides in making Longmont more bike friendly. Thanks to Len, Phil Greenwald, the Traffic Engineers and the entire Public Works Department for making that happen. As Laurel Mayhew said when referring to the condition of cycling in Longmont at our January meeting, "It isn't quite the way I would like it yet, but it is headed in that direction."

Len is finishing up the City's application to the League of American Bicyclists, www.bikeleague.org , in an attempt to have Longmont designated a League "Bicycle Friendly Community." He hopes to have the application completed by the end of February. Len's observation is that in the process of just filling out the application, he has learned a lot that is helping him in his job. Len, thank you for taking on that monumental challenge. Longmont will be better because of your efforts.

Things to watch for in the near future: the bike/pedestrian bridge on Price street that will connect Gay Street, over the St Vrain River to South Longmont; widening of Airport Road south of Rogers road. Within two years, widening Airport all the way to 17th; this year - putting safety shoulders on 75th from Niwot to Hwy 66; this year - completion of the new bike path under Main Street by Quail to the new Rec Center and Museum.

With that we adjourned on a very cold evening.
