Lauren and I set up a little after 8 a.m. The rain let
up long enough to make for a pleasant (if chilly) day.
The sweet cherries from Western Slope orchards were
delicious.
I didn't count the people who stopped at our table. We
gave away about 40 state bicycle maps. The CDOT
bicycle manuals were much less popular - I think we
handed out a dozen of those. I only printed 20
"Bicycle Longmont" cards; these were all gone within a
couple of hours.
*Everybody* wanted a city bike map; unfortunately, we
only had two on hand. Several people also wanted the
Boulder County Bike-To-Work-Day map. We'll need to
remember this for next time.
Most of our guests had questions about the paths in
town. One woman I spoke with rides RTD from Arvada to
Longmont then takes Call-n-Ride the rest of the way to
work. She's recently started biking to work from the
bus station and asked about routes.
One woman politely asked about the legality of
cyclists riding in the lane on the road up to
Jamestown. Several times she stated that this road is
unsafe for cyclists; we explained that it's the
responsibility of the overtaking motorist to pass
slower vehicles only when it's safe to do so.
The mayor of Lyons, Tim Kyer, stopped by wearing a TdF
cap. He asked for Bicycling Friendly Community
information and said he'd look into what would be
necessary for Lyons to get this award.
Lauren knows *everybody* in town. She should run for
mayor (or at least city council). ;-) Thanks to those
on the Bike Longmont mailing list who dropped by to
say hello!
REMEMBER: The LAB "Bicycling Friendly Community"
presentation will take place at 7:45 a.m. at the Civic
Center.
