There's a photo of Lauren and her son Andrew on the
front page above the fold of today's (Wednesday, June
23) Times-Call. If you visit the website before 10
a.m. Thursday (US Mountain Time, GMT -0700), the
article and photo are there also.

The article is, of course, a tie-in to Bike-To-Work
Day. The weather cooperated beautifully. Ben Ortiz and
several other people on the city staff did a great job
putting things together and running the breakfast
station at the Civic Center. City councilman Fred
Wilson was there also. Andy Clarke from the League of
American Bicyclists presented the Bicycle Friendly
Community award while we munched on bagels from Panera
and some really yummy breakfast bars from Vitamin
Cottage (can't remember the brand). The orange juice
from Naked was delicious.

As a wild guess I'd say there were at least 30 people
at the Civic Center during the LAB presentation,
including several people on the Bike Longmont list.
High Gear had a mechanic there for bike safety checks.
The owners of High Gear and Bike-n-Hike were there, as
were Nenad, Lauren, Phil Greenwald, Nick Wolfrum, Len
Marques, Craig Smith, David Oliver, and several
others. LPD Bike Patrol officer Chris Merkle rode in
from Firestone wearing his Bike Patrol t-shirt. The
woman in charge of Animal Control (whose name escapes
me at the moment) rode in from Mead. I didn't realize
this but Animal Control patrols the city trails on
bikes.

All in all it was a great event. Here are some
suggestions to build on these successes for next year:

 * Get those BTWD maps out before hand. We could've
handed out a hundred of those at the Farmers' Market
last Saturday.

 * Put the breakfast station and bike checkup close to
the street where everybody can see us.

 * Perhaps some more aggressive marketing of BTWD.
Have somebody hang out some weekend on the St Vrain
trail handing out those BTWD stickers. City resources
are limited, so make use of the pool of willing
volunteers in the Bike Longmont group.
