In my previous email I focused on cycling within
Longmont. A large part of transportation planning in
Longmont will have to deal with growth outside of
Longmont and the impact that growth is having on
transportation within Longmont. For example, Weld
County is one of the fastest growing areas in the
United States. Many Weld County residents commute to
and through Longmont to their jobs within Boulder
County.
My feeling is that the existing road infrastructure
adequately meets the needs of these longer-distance
commuters. Other than that, I'm not sure it's
realistic to push bicycling for longer trips as a
method of reducing traffic. For most people, bicycling
is much better suited for shorter trips.
Thoughts? Disagreements?
Perhaps things Longmont could do include continuing to
encourage Weld County to widen CR1, and to encourage
south Weld County to become part of the RTD.
