Nenad will have better notes than me; I hope he doesn't mind me posting
this. A lot is going on! I encourage everyone to get involved!
1. As part of the city's emphasis on traffic mitigation this year, a Traffic
Mitigation Task Force has been established to review the current traffic
mitigation strategy and recommend changes, if needed. Bicycle Longmont has
been asked to provide input into this Task Force. If anybody on this list
would like to participate and represent Bike Longmont, please contact Nenad
off-list.
2. Lauren is attending the League of American Bicyclist's Leadership
Conference <http://www.bikenewyork.org/BNY-TOUR.htm> in New York this May.
3. Lauren and Buzz put hundreds of hours into the Safe Routes program at
Spangler Elementary, and Spangler administration is very enthusiastic about
the program. Unfortunately, this enthusiasm couldn't overcome the lack of
time they had to put what was needed into it so Safe Routes will be put off
until next year. Sunset Middle School will have a Safe Routes program this
coming fall. What's really needed to make this work is parental
involvement. If you have a child in school please help by spearheading
bicycle education
efforts at your child's school.
4. More Bicycle Education ideas. Vitamin Cottage has classes for their
customers. Local Charity Rides really need a good dose of basic bicyclist
education before the ride -- many inexperienced riders doing dangerous
stuff. Dave Swenson @ Bike-n-Hike does something like this for his customers
before the MS150 ride.
5. Bike to ArtWalk <http://www.artwalklongmont.org/> is May 20, Friday night
from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Have lights on your bike. Lauren needs arsty bike
pictures (photos or drawings) for use on promotional brochures for this.
6. A Bike Month kickoff party for Bike Longmont members. Thursday, May 26.
Details to be announced.
7. Ryan's BIKE NIGHT rides will begin May 4. Every Wednesday night, 6:30 at
Roosevelt Park. Leave the lycra at home, please.
8. More Bike To Work Day stuff: Show up at Gizzi's and Cafe Luna on BTWD,
get a free cup of coffee.
9. Longmont Bike Map goes to print today. The 2005 Bike Map is the best yet.
Expect to see it in a couple of weeks. We also hope to have a digital copy
online at the Bike Longmont website Real Soon Now.
10. Buzz says more people seem to be buying bikes because of rising gas
prices.
11. The AIPP Bike Rack Painting
Party<http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum/aipp/index.htm> is
this Sunday. If you have ideas for public locations for these bike racks,
please email Lauren off list. These bike racks will be on display at the May
Bike To ArtWalk event.
12. Nenad will be gone in May. He and his wife will trek across the arctic
wilderness of Baffin Island <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baffin_Island>,
pulling sleds while on ski. If they get eaten by polar bears, he's agreed to
donate his belongings to Bicycle Longmont. What a guy!
