Hi gang,

Here's a note regarding the memorial ride that will occur Thursday evening,
June 16 in memory of Scott Kornfield. He's the bicyclist who was killed last
Monday morning on
US36<http://www.masoner.net/bike/2005/05/bicyclist-killed-north-of-boulder.html>north
of Boulder. I encourage anyone who can to participate.

Hi all,

Still working out the final details but things are moving along. I've had so
many emails asking questions about the latest info, I thought I better
respond to the biking community as a whole instead of in bits and pieces.
Please send this email out to all your biking buddies so they know what's
going on.

The date has been set for Thursday, June 16th, probably meet at
6:00-6:15ish, ride at 6:30pm.

I think we've come up with a route in southwest Longmont (with a lot of
help, thanks everyone!) but we're still working on the parking situation.
I'll send out one more email with the final details. I've received tons of
emails about this ride, we have a VERY strong and supportive biking
community here.

We've been asked not to call this ride a Ride of Silence and I understand
why Chris has asked us not to use the name. I've included his email below my
signature. I hope everyone understands. Instead we'll call it a Memorial
Ride for Scott. We'll still be contacting the media and the police for a
little extra help. I spoke with the Longmont Police and boy were they nice.
Sgt. Bruce Wittich told me that an escort requires a permit that takes 20
days to process, so that's out. However he asked that I send him all the
details and he would send out an office email letting all the police
officers know what was going on and why, the route we would be taking, and
ask that they keep an eye out for us and make sure everything was ok.

We'll still need to contact the Boulder Sheriff's Dept, keep your fingers
crossed that they are as great as the Longmont Police Dept.

So, a few little details left to iron out but the ride has really blossomed.
You guys are all great. Nate and Kristyn have expressed their gratitude at
this outpouring of support.

Thank you,
Julia

Chris Phelan, here. I'm the Founder/Organizer of The Ride Of Silence.
I want to address Julia since she will be leading the ride.

As you may know, this type of incident is exactly the way the death to my
friend that inspired The Ride Of Silence (Larry Schwartz: Google), happened.
But with the recognition of that one cyclist's life, came hundreds more. To
point of this past May 18 when in it's third year, the ride has grown to
nine countries and over 120 US sites. Incredible. The out pouring of love,
support, and empathy is over whelming. But even more than that is the rate
of occurrence this is happening. The numbers of cyclists being killed is
growing every year with no sign of decline.

This is why, when presented with other requests to have other "Ride's Of
Silence," we have had to keep it to one day, the third Wednesday in May at 7
PM, to keep the focus of the American public, who we are trying to reach. **
sigh** Julia, Nate, Kristen Kornfield and Todd Kornfield: I hope you
understand.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN "NOT" HAVE A MEMORIAL RIDE. In fact, I would
encourage one. But to keep confusion at bay and out of respect to the
communities, families, and friends who look forward to that one day to
remember their loved ones in a public forum, we ask that you not use the
name "The Ride Of Silence," or the logo of the biker kneeling next to his
bike.

Again, I would encourage you to have a memorial ride where you can set your
own date, time, and rules. I have found and others have echoed these same
feelings, that the ride brings a certain kind of closure. I would also
recommend you join us next year to remember Scott and others on May 19, 2006
when this and other countries will join you in mourning and awareness.

Thank you for remembering The Ride Of Silence.
If you any questions, please contact me. Further, I would be more than happy
to assist in anyway possible. If you would like to talk to me in person,
that would be OK, too. Please send me a phone number you can be reached.

Thank you for your time and understanding.
Know that I grieve with you, as do thousands of others.
Chris Phelan
