Something to figure out eventually....
Most of you probably know that SVVSD adopted "Proposal A" for Middle
School 7 boundaries. Students from the Rocky Mountain Elementary
School area will have to cross both Pace Street and 9th Avenue to
reach the new middle school, while students from the Alpine Elementary
area will need to cross 17th to get to Heritage Middle School.
The school district's answer to these barriers is bussing. Heritage
will require three additional buses because of these barriers. Middle
School #7 will need an additional 4 buses to transport students across
the barriers who otherwise live close enough to walk or bike
(according to school policy).
Each bus costs the district $29,000 annually to operate, with each bus
servicing two school because of teired scheduling. Hence, St. Vrain
proposes to spend $116,000 every year to transport students across the
barriers.
It seems to me the money might be better spent on SR2S type spending,
especially if federal money is available for this kind of thing. I
hope Lauren and Buzz's grass roots efforts at Spangler can spread to
the point that our board of education might be able to think outside
the box a little.
